I-10 through the bayou has some interesting eating spots. We settled on Don's Specialty Meats. It is a meat store/deli/convenient store.
They specialize in cracklin (deep fried bacon with skin and Cajun seasoning)-this was Lisa's favorite......and boudin (pronounced boo-dan which is a Cajun sausage). Ellie (per usual) got a hot dog......usually served with chili, but too spicy for her. She had ketchup instead-no bun. Lisa and I split a pork boudin, cracklin, boudin tots (fried potatoes, boudin and pepper jack cheese) and finally a stuffed bread. My favorite was the buttery stuffed bread with a meat mixture. It was bacon, sausage, and ground beef-kinda like a homemade hot pocket... Hot pocket (Insert theme song). Lisa thought it needed some cheese or sauce. I like the meats. The boudin was served boiled and would have been killer grilled. Boiling made the casing tough and the inside mushy but it had an awesome flavor.
They sell about 100 varieties including Cajun, jalapeƱo, and of course gator. Friendly staff and good variety leaves me no choice but to give it a Wilkins' seal of approval.
Until next time-Adieu
Russell, Lisa, and Baby Cakes!
